Matt’s Transmission Repair, Inc., (Matt’s) has been in business for fifteen years and today may be by far the largest independent heavy commercial transmission repair and warranty service (and parts sales) business in Hawai‘i.

Started by Nathan Reyes in 1991, and named after his son, Matt, the company has grown from a single employee to a team of 10 professionals (including Reyes as of June 2005).  The company incorporated on August 2nd 1992.

Growth during the 90’s was particularly impressive given the State’s depressed economic condition.   The company’s success was due in part to being one of only two Authorized Allison Dealers in the State and being the only direct dealer in the nation.  (Allison is the largest manufacturer of heavy/medium transmissions and is a General Motors company.)  That, combined with outstanding customer service has made Matt’s the favorite for some of the State’s largest heavy vehicle fleet owners.

By 2001 the company had outgrown its facility and through good fortune was offered and purchased its’ present facility on Sand Island.  The 7500 square foot property included a two-story office/residence building and an enclosed metal structure that housed equipment, inventory and three work bays.

However, the impact of September 11th that same year had unforeseen implications on the company’s sales.  Tour bus clients in particular cut maintenance due to the fall-off in business the commercial vehicle maintenance market in general was severely affected by 9/11.  The company reduced its’ staff and successfully weathered the economic downturn.

Matt’s service philosophy is driven by its’ founder, Nathan Reyes who sincerely believes that “the customer is always first”.  Known for his quality of workmanship and service Matt’s has created an enviable, loyal clientele list that includes some of the largest fleets on the island (and State).

It’s a good business model that Nathan employs at Matt’s.  They use the best testing equipment available prior to installation of a transmission.  Matt’s staff regularly attends manufacturer and industry meetings and training events.  This insures a lower warranty return rate and a more satisfied long-term client.  Nathan understands the impact of lost business to a customer when a commercial vehicle is in his shop.  He strives to ensure a quick turnaround to customer and it shows in his client list.  To name a few:
